Karate Competition Equipment Guide (WKF)

Karate Competition Equipment Guide (WKF)

At Senosen Martial Arts School, we actively prepare our students to participate in karate competitions. Competing helps students build confidence, discipline, focus, and resilience while applying their training in a real performance environment.

Many of the tournaments our students attend follow the rules of the World Karate Federation (WKF), the international governing body for sport karate. While training is the most important factor in competition success, athletes must also use the correct equipment to meet tournament safety standards.

It is important to note that some local or smaller competitions may not enforce all WKF equipment rules. However, any official WKF-sanctioned event requires competitors to wear WKF-approved gear that meets international safety standards.  Below is a guide explaining the equipment typically required for the two main competition categories: Kata and Kumite (sparring).

Equipment for Kata Competitions

Kata competitors generally do not need protective equipment, but presentation and uniform quality are very important.

Karate Gi (Uniform)

The most important requirement for kata is a proper karate gi. Although kata can technically be performed in any gi, many competitors prefer heavier material uniforms (10–12 oz). A heavier gi produces a stronger visual effect and creates the distinctive “snap” sound during techniques, which helps demonstrate the power and precision of movements.

Competition Belts (Aka & Ao)

In WKF competitions, athletes wear two official belt colors:

  • Red (Aka)
  • Blue (Ao)

These belts allow referees and judges to clearly identify competitors during matches.

Equipment for Kumite (Sparring) Competitions

Kumite competitions involve controlled contact between athletes, so protective equipment is required to ensure safety. All gear used in official tournaments must be WKF-approved equipment.

Mandatory Equipment for All Kumite Competitors

Regardless of age or level, kumite competitors must have:

  • WKF Sparring Gloves (Red and Blue)
  • WKF Shin Guards and Foot Protectors (Red and Blue)
  • Mouth Guard
  • Groin Protector (mandatory for male competitors)
  • Body Protector
    • 13 years and younger would need External body protector (Children Chest Protector)
    • 14 years and older would need Internal body Protector underneath the karate gi
    • Female competitors must also wear a female chest protector underneath the gi for additional protection
  • WKF Approved Helmet mandatory for 13 years and younger

These items provide protection while still allowing athletes to move freely and perform techniques effectively.

Preparing Students for Competition

At Senosen Martial Arts School, we help students and families prepare for competitions step by step from technical training to selecting the correct equipment. Whether a student is preparing for their first local tournament or aiming to compete in WKF-level events, our goal is to ensure they feel confident, prepared, and properly equipped.

Competition is not only about medals. It is about personal growth, discipline, and learning to perform under pressure. If you or your child is interested in competition training, explore our karate classes in North Vancouver to get started.
